| I apologize if this topic isn't appropriate for these forums, but I'm wondering where a good place to buy a dizi is. There are several models I could purchase online, but none of them are name brands and I don't know what kind of quality I'd be getting. Does anyone have any advice on how to find a good one? I'm looking for an intermediate flute--something that's decent and not a cheap beginner model. | |

| Hmm. That's three different charts I've consulted - the fluteland.com fignering chart too. The fingering is identical for F natural, G , A B for the lowest and middle octaves ? ???? There is no indication on any of the chart that any lever be used to change octaves. Well it doesn't matter anyway. I've got an octave range so I'll keep practicing embouchure with that until I figure it out. |

| It's when you get to the "G" key on the C1 or C2 or C3 octaves that you have to have your litle pincky finger in place Try that and see if it works. Good luck ----- jimdand |

| Sorry it wasn't the C - C1 or C2 octaves I wasn't clear about. More the 'A's and the 'B's. I've found a better fingering chart than the one I've been using: http://www.jennifercluff.com/flutefingeringchart.pdf This one shows the keys much clearer - the smaller ones I was just guessing what they meant. It's clearer now - but I'm still confused about the right pinkie (small finger). It's covered in may of the low and middle octaves: how do I actually cover it on the flute? Is it the first hole or both holes, operated by the finger roller? I know I should really get a teacher to learn, but at the minute I'm so bad at playing that I need to practice and actually get the basics before wasting money |

| Actually, you said you have a chart. I don't know what chart you're using --- but just try what I suggested. If it doesn't work, then post me and I'll see if I can help, further. jimdand |

| I think I know what you're talking about. NO, it's not a question of breathing "harder" --- it's fingering. In C1, all keys are closed. When you progress to the "top" of C1 --- wherein the first finger of your left hand is only used --- then the fingering changes. Next, of course, comes "D2, following C". In C1, as I said, all keys are closed. BUT, in C2, lift your first left finger up, with all other keys closed. This will give you "D2". From that point on, to accomplish C2, you need to press your RIGHT little finger on the first key on your foot-joint. Difficult to explainon the Net --- wish I could give you a fingering chart. But, again, it's not "how hard you are blowing" --- you're missing the fingering. Maybe you should get a chart? Hope I helped. Regards, jimdand |

| Hi everyone, I've just joined and after being exhilarated at being able to play one note, I'm now able to play a whole octave! The problem is - I'm teaching myself. Okay - that isn't the problem..I have several I wonder if anyone can help me understand to speed my progress with my C soprano flute. 1. I'm looking at the on-line fingering chart and for notes like A, the fingering in the middle octave is identical to the the higher octave. I can't work out how to play A in the higher octave. Do I just blow harder to change the pitch of the note? Surely this can't be right? The same problem with middle C and C an octave above. 2. When fingering with the bottom C, the notation of all the charts I see, show a kind of 'apostrophe' like - does this mean that I press down the roller, to hold down the bottom two air holes or just the lever for the uppermost airhole in third joint beneath the Left Hand fourth finger key? Thanks for any help. PS - I use a Trevor James flute. |

Why not set yourself a goal and transcribe or pen yourself the flute solo part to your favourite pop or rock song? I've set myself that goal too. I want to transcribe Beethoven's string quartets - all four parts to play for flute solo. I've just learnt where middle C is on the C soprano concert flute. I am really excited now that I've finally started my mission! |
